HELLO :D this is basically just me rambling about MCR, so if you have no interest in that then uhhhhhhhhh. Idk. This probably isnt for you I guess. BUT! if you are maybe a bit curious of MCRS music, whether only hearing a few songs or being completely unaware, and are looking to delve into some of their music, I'll (hopefully) be including each song on this page after reviewing them, and will be leaving a link to Spotify and Youtube playlists of my favorite songs! MCR has been one of my favorite bands since childhood, and honestly I am much more of a fan of them now that I'm an adult. It truly was not a phase.
This list is going to over every mcr song that has been featured on one of their four albums. this list will not include b-sides, eps, singles, etc. This is mostly due to the fact that I’ll also be ranking the albums at the end based on how many songs from each album i enjoyed the most. And also, i will admit that i rarely listen to songs outside of those albums. There are a few i do enjoy, especially a few from the b-sides of black parade, but this is already going to be a lot of songs and honestly just really don’t feel like including them. BUT, that being said i’ll list some off albums songs that are some honorable mentions. obviously this means i will also not be included side projects, though i will say i am a big fan of frank ieros work outside of mcr, especially the 2016 album “parachutes”.
I honestly feel bad about saying this, but I never really got into Gerard Ways solo music.... Its just not really my taste, but I still definitely support the grind. One song I do absoluely love for some reason is his song "Professional Griefers" with deadmau5. I stumbled upon that song as teen and it was a staple for my daily gym class laps around the football field. But yeah, all the love for gerard and any creative projects he makes, hes an extremely talented musician and artist and I hold a lot of respect for him. The same goes for MCR as a whole, though a large part of my brain wishes I would have been there when they were just starting out, playing much more intimate (and less expensive....) shows, I do believe they deserve all of the publicity/popularity they recieve. People often dismiss them as edgy teen music, which I guess is fair, but I dont think its quite that simple. So many people, not just kids/teens/young adults, say that MCR changed or even save their lives. I know this is a kinda controversial statement, or "cringe" I guess, but I somewhat relate I guess? Sure, no song or band probably cannot literally make you immediately cured of whatever life struggles you are facing, but certain art forms like music can help you feel less alone in what you are going through. Thats what I beleve that statement means at least. Even if the song does not perfectly describe youre exact situation, music is able to be interperated and molded to fit your own personal narrative, as you find yourself relating to the lyrics, or even just the tone of the song. I guess long story short is that MCR got me through some really fucking hard times, throughout nearly half of my life now.
Also, i am unsure of if i will be going into detail on specific “lore” surrounding the albums, as each album does entail certain storylines that possibly bleed into each other. i think i may go more into detail on storyline interpretations on a separate page or something. For now i think i will probably just look at each individual song as opposed to the wider “plot” of the albums.Kinda giving my opinions, personal interpretations, along with other interpretations i have found that i resognate with.
Okay enough yapping. lll be going through the albums from oldest to newest, with the first album being “i brought you my bullets, you brought me your love”:
Before i get started on the songs, i’d like to bring up how possibly overlooked this album is. With more successful later releases like “the black parade”, and the fact that is is their first album, i feel like it is not as talked about or praised enough. That’s of course not completely true, this is still a very loved album by many mcr fans, but it’s no surprise that the more popular albums outshine this one. I’ll even admit that I had not even listened to this album until years after I had discovered mcr, and even in the first listen, i do not think i truly began to appreciate it until later on. The sound is much different than the two albums following it, i’m not a music expert but in my amateur opinion it sounds much more “raw”, if that makes any sense. Less of that higher production sound that other albums have. I’ve actually seen many people online say that this album is much more “emo/emo influenced”, in comparison to their other works. Contrary to popular belief, my chemical romance is not technically part of the “emo genre”, but i am by no means an expert in these topics of genre and am definitely still learning. But just listening to this side by side with some earlier emo bands, stemming from the punk/ hardcore scene, i do see some similarities between them that is lost in their later releases- which is not a bad thing, just kind of an observation. This album also feels very different in other ways i don’t know if i can explain. It feels very emotional.
Okay, so let’s get to the songs-
“Romance”- this song, being completely instrumental, is basically a prelude to the album as a whole. I don’t have too much to say on this, as it’s only a iminute long, but it definitely does set the tone for what’s to come. Like I’ve previously about this album in regards to its less “produced” sound, this track reflects that in its distorted and ambient sound. I’ve heard someone say it sounds like youre stranded, walking alone on vacant desert land, and I definitely can get that visual from this. It’s eerie, disheartening, as if something truly painful has just occurred, giving you this sense of hopelessness.
“Honey, this mirror isn’t big enough for the both of us”- This is definitely one of the strongest tracks in this album, in my opinion of course. It’s got a catchy chorus, gritty vocals and screams, going back and forth between slower paced and more aggressive and emotional. This track truly reflects his vocal abilities in the best possible way. Listening to this invokes both a sense of frustration and dread, whether towards a specific individual or just in general.
“Vampires will never hurt you” - Oh geez, I don’t even know how i can properly articulate how much absolutely love this song. It perfectly captures everything I adore about this album, and possibly MCR as a whole. The lyrics are so heavy, i hate saying “emotional” so much but my vocabulary is not very broad so that’s the only accurate way I can describe it. Though I’m not quite sure if this is confirmed, I’ve heard that is track is partially regarding the struggles of addiction/alcoholism. Even if that is not 100% correct, I can still very much see that in the lyrics, and it’s adds a whole new layer of interpretation and depth of the song. The whole song leads up to the anguished lines at the end, “can you stake my heart?” repeated over and over. This, to me, feels like a respresentaion of the shame that comes with, and follows, addiction. Other ways I can possibly read this song is the feeling of trying to overcome addiction, with the line "can you take this spike? Will it wash away this jet black feeling?", the need for something to put you out of the misery of addiction and urges. The pleading in the song, for someone to "save my soul", in my perspective sounds like trying to find a way out of this destructive path. "Struck down before our prime" being how often addiction creeps up on a, possibly vulnerable, person at a young age, an age that should be a time of oppurtunity and freedom. "Ill never let them hurt you" could possibly mean choosing to die as a solution to the harmful behaviors a person shows towards loved ones in the midst of addiction and mental anguish.
This song means so much to me, I’m not completely sure as to why exactly that is. During distressing moments in my life, I find myself hearing this song in my head, using it almost as a coping skill to calm my mind. That may sound cringe, but I’ll embrace that label. And I know we’re early on in the list, but I feel as if I have to put this song in the “play this at my funeral” category, as I very much, in fact, would like this to be a song i go out to.
"Drowning lessons”- This is one of the songs from this album that I did not fully appreciate until a few listens. It’s more fast and “upbeat”, which is in much contrast to the previous track. This lyrics read of a love story, albeit one full of despair. In a more literal interpretation, it could follow someone who loses their lover and is reliving the grief. But also, it could represent a toxic relationship full of patterns of instability. One moment being in love, the next feeling hatred towards the other, and the cycle continues.
"Our Lady of Sorrows"- This song to me reads as a way of standing up, or fighting back, against a hardship or harmful individual. This being alongside a person close to you, as this song is basically them talkng to that person, in a sense.
